Dr. Sharon Austin is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in working with couples in all phases of their relationship, helping partners to learn new communication skills, form more secure and trusting bonds, and experience greater emotional intimacy. She utilizes both a traditional office setting as well as bringing clients to work with her horses for equine-assisted psychotherapy.
Dr. Austin draws from over 28 years of experience in private practice, helping adults overcome relationship difficulties, sexual difficulties, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Her work is informed by the expanding fields of neuroscience, attachment, body-centered psychotherapy, mindfulness, and human-equine communication. Dr. Austin works collaboratively, encouraging couples to have a sense of curiosity and compassion for each other's here-and-now experience that goes beyond the spoken words.
Couples learn to increase their awareness and understanding of how non-verbal cues (gestures, facial expressions, body position) can enhance connection or cause distress and threat. They also learn how past experience with safety and security influence and often inhibit deeper connections in current relationships. From this awareness, people have the capacity to make deep, long-lasting changes in themselves and their relationships.
Dr. Austin also works in the area of chronic tick-borne diseases, helping individuals and couples navigate this challenging realm, as well as raising awareness of the emotional and physical affects of tick-borne illnesses.
